Mandel: Why the Playoff selection committee eschewed controversy

Notre Dame has been rewarded for its undefeated regular season with one of the four spots in the 2019 College Football Playoff.

It's going to be the Oklahoma Sooners, the 13-member selection committee in Grapevine, Texas, announced Sunday.

The ACC champion Tigers (13-0, No. 2 CFP) will play Notre Dame (12-0, No. 3 CFP) in the Cotton Bowl on December 29 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

As players tuned into the selection show, they saw Oklahoma's name appear on the bracket in the No. 4 spot.

Prior to Saturday's SEC Championship, the Georgia Bulldogs were ranked No. 4 in the country.

The other teams advancing to the playoff are the Crimson Tide, No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Notre Dame.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, teams favored by 10 or more points have won 88.2 percent of those games over the past three seasons. Alabama and Clemson are the third and fourth teams to be double-digit favorites in a playoff game, semifinal or final. Hurts did the rest, capping the game-winning drive with a 16-yard quarterback sneak.

With the playoff field set, we asked the experts that cover each team why their school will and will not win the national championship.
