George H.W. Bush's service dog, Sully, is honored: 'Mission complete'

Bush died at his Houston home on Friday night at the age of 94, seven months after the death of his wife, Barbara.

"There will be much more that I will want to say about President Bush's legacy in the days and weeks to come as we honor his memory". In another image of unity, House Speaker Paul Ryan and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi did the same several minutes later, standing next to one another as a second wreath was placed. Trump saluted the casket.

Political combatants set aside their fights to honor a Republican who led in a less toxic era and at times found commonality with Democrats despite sharp policy disagreements. His son, George W. Bush, later released a statement about the passing of his father. It was to remain open overnight.

The Kansas Republican, 95, who like Bush was a decorated veteran from his service in World War II, was the Republican presidential nominee in 1996 against President Clinton.

Bush will lie in state all day.

The service is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

Post offices will close, the US stock market will shutter and the Supreme Court has postponed arguments on Wednesday for the upcoming National Day of Mourning to honor former President George H.W. Bush.

She recalled Bush as a man of "honor, dignity and graciousness" and a president who worked across the aisle and sought good relations with other nations.

After accompanying Bush's casket to the U.S. Capitol, the dog was led by America's VetDogs manager Valerie Cramer to pay his respects while wearing an American flag vest emblazoned with his name.

"He was the first president I voted for", he said, calling the late president someone who felt "public service is more important than politics".

His body will return to Houston on Wednesday evening and will lie in repose at St. Martin's Episcopal Church until Thursday morning when he will be eulogized during a funeral at the church.

Shortly before leaving the service, he married his 19-year-old sweetheart, Barbara Pierce, and forged the longest presidential marriage in US history.

He graduated from Yale in 1948 with a degree in economics. He was elected to the first of two terms in Congress in 1967. Dole was a member of the U.S. Army while Bush was a U.S. Navy pilot. "He reached the heights of power with uncommon humility".
