President from 1989 to 1993, Mr Bush died on Friday at the age of 94.

Sully, who had been in the former President's service since early this year, was assigned to him in his last days in a wheelchair. They stood in front of the casket with their eyes closed for a few moments, before Trump saluted the casket.

The Trump White House has accommodated all the Bush family's requests for the state funeral.

But yesterday, Trump wrote members of Congress to hail Bush as a man who "led a life that exemplified what is truly great about America".

He says Bush lived his life with "a fundamental decency that resonates across generations".

The announcement left some wondering about if Charles ever met the late president or if they had a friendship. Presidents are traditionally asked to eulogize presidents who have died - and in past state events like this, that has been the case - but the Bush family is unlike any other and has another president in the family who will fill that role.

Vice President Mike Pence has offered the nation's condolences to the family of the late former President George H.W. Bush.

McConnell called Bush a "steady hand staying the course" over his public service, while Ryan said that the president taught him that "in a democracy, sometimes you fall short", and how you handle those shortcomings "is just as important as how you win". "He kept us flying high and challenged us to fly higher still".

His remains arrived Monday afternoon at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington aboard an aircraft that often serves as Air Force One.

Bush is the 12th USA president to lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda.

Even though he could no longer use his legs, the former president celebrated his 90 birthday by making a tandem parachute jump - a repeat performance of a similar jump he completed on his 85 birthday.

A flag-draped casket was brought to Capitol Hill on Monday after being sent off from Texas with a 21-gun salute, as Americans gathered to pay their respects ahead of his funeral on Wednesday.

Bush Sr.'s funeral will reportedly be held Wednesday morning at the Washington National Cathedral. She conveyed that to the president, who did not attend that funeral, the official said. George W. Bush will give a eulogy.

Baker instead emphasised his friend's foreign-policy successes: navigating the end of the Cold War, negotiating two nuclear arms-reduction treaties, and summoning a varied global coalition to eject Iraqi troops from Kuwait in the first Gulf War.

But he was dogged by domestic problems, including a sluggish economy.
