Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer to retire after Rose Bowl

Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer to retire after Rose Bowl

As NPR's James Doubek reported, "Meyer fired Zach Smith, an assistant coach, on July 23 after learning of reports that". It isn't healthy but I came to work every day with fear of letting people like Archie Griffith and the our great state of OH down because this is home.

He says his headaches have become a persistent problem. "His strengths really come in the classroom and to be able to teach you and understand the game plan of what you want to accomplish and why you want to get that accomplished so you're successful".

Meyer led the Buckeyes to an undefeated record in his first season at the helm in 2012, one in which the program was barred from a bowl game due to NCAA sanctions. Meyer declined to comment when asked about the report. He answered: "I'm sure it will..."

"It has been an honor to represent for the last seven years this football program, my home state of OH, this university and community that I care so deeply about", Meyer said. The 54-year-old, who has an arachnoid cyst in his brain that causes severe headaches, will step down after he coaches in the Rose Bowl against Washington.

Remember that initially Meyer said he was going to spend more time with his family and get healthy. The Buckeyes are 12-1 after winning the Big Ten. His teams finished in the top six of the final rankings in five of the previous six seasons. He said the move needed to be made before the early signing period opens on December 19.

"We have enjoyed an incredible run".

"I'm solid!" Miller said via text.

Why is Urban Meyer retiring? A news conference with Meyerand school officials was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.

Brown told reporters that Meyer called him on Tuesday morning to tell him about his decision to retire after the Rose Bowl on January 1, a decision that was announced on Tuesday. It's obvious, it's been well-publicized about his health issues.

"Brown added: "(Meyer) told me that he couldn't be animated at the level he needed to to energize the team and stay healthy". He just took over at North Carolina.

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, a three-time national champion and future College Football Hall of Famer, announced his retirement at a 2 p.m. ET press conference on Tuesday. Because Day coached with former Meyer assistant Steve Addazio at Boston College, he already had familiarity with Meyer's offensive scheme and terminology, which helped him hit the ground running in Columbus last season. Former Sooners coach Bob Stoops abruptly announced his retirement in June, and the university handed the program over to his young, up-and-coming offensive coordinator.

Translating that coachspeak, that means Meyer will take some time away from coaching, Ohio State is in great hands with Ryan Day taking over as the head coach, and in a year or two, if his health is improved, he'd return to coaching.

Meyer guided Ohio State to the national championship in 2014 after doing so at Florida in 2006 and 2008.

Meyer had shown obvious effects of being in pain on the sideline this season.

Smith was sacked this year after being accused by his ex-wife of domestic abuse. He served as the Buckeyes interim head coach during Meyer's suspension earlier this season, leading the team to three wins. The decision comes after a season in which the university suspended him for three games and he revealed that he was suffering from a cyst in his brain. "He was the most upfront coach that we had contact with, saying that if I worked hard I could earn a spot and how I needed to work for what I wanted there".
