Trump says hopes to meet N.Korea's Kim in January or February

"I'd like to really advise the North Korean leader that the world is ready" to help his country, Ban told The Associated Press, specifically citing South Korea, the U.S., China, Japan and Russian Federation.

"The soldier is safely in our custody", the JCS said.

North Korea is seeking security guarantees from the US and relief from worldwide sanctions.

The incident did not trigger any gunfire, unlike a year ago when a North Korean soldier ran across under a hail of bullets from his own side.

The defector crossed the military demarcation line separating the two countries and was spotted by surveillance equipment, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

"I think it will be absolutely imperative in this next summit that we come away with a plan for identifying all of the weapons in question, identifying all the development sites, allowing for inspections of the sites and the plan for dismantling nuclear weapons", Pence said. He said denuclearization is important for a better future for the two Koreas, including reconciliation and reunification.

When it arrives at Panmun Station - the first North Korean terminal across the border - the six carriages will be linked up to a North Korean train, and the South Korean locomotive will return home.

Three other soldiers reportedly crossed the land border past year in separate incidents.

U.S. President Donald Trump says his next meeting with North Korea's Kim Jong Un is likely to happen in January or February.

Cheong Wa Dae said Moon and Trump met for about 30 minutes in Argentina on Friday and discussed Kim's visit to Seoul as well as sanctions against North Korea.

It comes as the North and South Korea have pushed to implement a wide-ranging military agreement reached in September to reduce tensions across their border.

They have also begun work to reconnect a train line and fix another rail link across the border.

According to related reports, Seoul and Pyongyang had agreed on Kim making the trip in mid-December, but the North requested the trip to be postponed due to security concerns.

'We actually have talked about three sites, we haven't determined the sites, ' he said, sparking speculation that Kim could make an historic first visit to the US.
