Risk of iced roads grows as snowstorm closes in on North Carolina

Snowfall could total 12 to 20 inches over the Appalachians and into the Carolinas by Monday - when the storm is expected to move off the coast, the agency said. This will be a heavy, wet snow, which could lead to some power issues and slick travel conditions throughout the day and into the night. And many hardware stores sold out of ice melt.

In South Carolina, more than 255,600 customers have lost power, according to reports, while around 20,000 and 30,000 customers in Tennessee and Georgia, respectively, are now without electricity. And between Alabama and Georgia, more than 62,000 customers don't have electricity.

North Carolina is hunkering down for another big storm, and more than 100,000 of its residents are without power and hundreds of flights have been canceled as Winter Storm Diego rolled through on Sunday, reports CNN.

Governor Roy Cooper shared news of the deaths on Twitter Monday morning, writing that the snow "turned into a nightmare and tragedy for some", and that the state mourned the loss of life as he extended his sympathies to the victims' families.

Virginia State Police said I-81 in far southwest Virginia has been particularly risky, with snow coming down faster Sunday afternoon than crews could clear it.

There were 6,980 Wake County customers without power Sunday morning.

"Our advice to you is unless you absolutely have to go out... Don't get out on treacherous roads", the ocunty Emergency Management Department tweeted. A woman in Haywood County died after a power outage disrupted the machine supplying her oxygen.

In South Carolina, a state known for palmettos rather than freezing rain, ice-covered roads are making driving conditions perilous.

Officials have warned residents to prepare emergency kits and staff off roads in impacted areas.

Richmond and surrounding areas received around nine inches of snow this week, the National Weather Service in Wakefield, Virginia, reported. The storm petered out before it got inside the Capital Beltway, but parts of the WTOP listening area did indeed run into some ice and snow on Sunday evening.
