Manchester United were unexpectedly handed the opportunity to finish top of their Champions League group but, while they wasted that chance and Mourinho admitted they could blame only themselves, he said he had no regrets about fielding a changed line-up and insisted that finishing second still represented "a success, never a failure".

Carlos Soler opened the scoring in Valencia's 2-1 win with Phil Jones' calamitous second-half own goal proving too much for Mourinho's side.

United failed to earn a win that would have given the team top spot in Group H, with first-placed Juventus losing 2-1 at Young Boys.

Paul Pogba remains Manchester United's record signing after his £92 million move from Juventus back in the summer of 2016.

The result means little to Valencia, who were already assured of a Europa League place, but the ease with which they claimed only a second competitive win over United will give them heart in a hard season.

With no shots on target before the break, United would have hoped for a strong start to the second half, but they were 2-0 down 47 minutes in when Jones diverted a throughball past the onrushing Romero. Unfortunately for the defender, he did not manage to direct it properly and put it straight into his own net.

Defeat means they will play a group victor in the knockout stage, one of Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, Paris St-Germain, Porto, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. "I don't think we were brilliant in this group phase but we did enough points to qualify", he added.

Mourinho's team could have been in pot one for the round of 16. He was so risky in the first half that Marcos Rojo was hauled off at half-time.

Jones marched off at half-time shaking his head, having berated his midfield for failing to track back, but the interval brought no relief.

United would get one back late on, with Marcus Rashford heading home a cross from fellow sub Ashley Young.

Being interviewed on BT Sport after the Valencia loss, Mourinho was asked: "I give you one player for Christmas, what position in the team would you take a player now?"
