Ms Catriona Gray of the Philippines (centre) is congratulated by contestants after winning the Miss Universe 2018 on December 17, 2018 in Bangkok.

Ponce was crowned Miss Spain in June.

Same goes for Gerard Quizon, who sketched an animated version of Gray reflecting her first walk as Miss Universe and subtly showing the Philippine flag to emphasize "Pinoy pride".

She also described what it felt like to be on the receiving end of so much online hatred. As long as I know my intentions were pure, people around me know me - they know that I would never say anything like that deliberately - so I just had to be okay with that and let other people say what they wanna say.

"What an honor and pride to be part of the history of @missuniverse", she wrote in an Instagram post.

"I would love to hear her personal experience on the battlefront of being a transgender woman", she said. She further added, "Trans women have been persecuted and erased for so long". And she has a objective.

She participated in the Miss World Spain 2015 pageant where she represented Cadiz. "She is that voice for the transgender community".

Catriona Gray, 24, finished first ahead of the South African and Venezuelan finalists in the glittering televised event hosted by American comic turned TV host Steve Harvey and supermodel Ashley Graham.
