Actor Kevin Spacey’s bid to avoid appearing in Massachusetts court denied

Actor Kevin Spacey’s bid to avoid appearing in Massachusetts court denied

The 59-year-old Oscar-winning actor had argued he should be excused from attending his January 7 arraignment at the Nantucket District Court because his presence would "amplify the negative publicity already generated in connection with this case". According to a court filing obtained by CBS News, Spacey also indicated he would plead not guilty.

Prosecutors, who allege Spacey groped an 18-year-old man in a Nantucket restaurant in 2016, asked the judge to deny the motion.

His lawyer added that his presence would heighten the "prejudicial media interest" in the case and contaminate the jury pool.

Cape and Islands Assistant District Attorney Michael Giardino opposed the request, reports the Associated Press, writing that Spacey's appearance is required under state rules for criminal case procedure.

Kevin Spacey broke his radio silence last week with a unusual video after going underground for a whole year following the accusations of sexual assault levelled against him.

According to police reports, the teen claimed Spacey bought multiple drinks for him after they were introduced at restaurant and bar, and made several suggestive comments, including inviting back his house, and even, allegedly, unzipped the teenager's pants to rub his penis through his underwear as they stood in a crowded area.

It was claimed the alleged victim told others of the incident at the time, but reportedly cited his embarrassment having been "sexually assaulted by a famous person".

"Retired since 2017" suggests that Spacey had a say in his fall from grace; in reality, his career was derailed by numerous accusations of sexual misconduct, which found new resonance in the #MeToo movement.
