Shaqiri sees the bigger picture before Liverpool face Manchester City

In the last decade, only two sides who were leading at Christmas failed to win the league-both were Liverpool.

It is quite understandable to see why they have usurped Thursday's opponents, Manchester City, as the favorites to win the league.

It is a match City can not afford to lose - and realistically have to win considering the relentless progress of Liverpool, who remain unbeaten 20 matches into the season. They just get the job done and only need one. If teams are coming here maybe a bit anxious then of course that works to our advantage.

"We won't see a boring, tactical affair but I am anxious a little bit for City at left-back", Keown wrote in his column for BBC.

"Today for us it's a clear example that if we are not consistent enough, with not only good quality during the game, and the right energy, it's hard to compete for big things", said a disappointed Mauricio Pochettino. He spoke out with motivation for the team and feels they won't be like their counterparts of last season, who barely put up a fight in the quest for Premier League glory.

"And I think this game is maybe too big and too important for them to fix everything right on time".

"But the thing is, they completed it and they've got their winners' medal and the trophy". We might be nine points in front now but we have to go to Manchester City in five days.

Chelsea now have a five-point cushion in the race for a top-four finish and defensive reinforcements are clearly needed in January if Arsenal are to compete for a Champions League return.

Robertson does not believe that victory can be compared to the challenge awaiting Liverpool on Thursday given the two-legged, knock-out nature of the previous meeting.

He said: "Manchester City have lost that ruthlessness about them".

"It is normal for this to happen when you spend three to four months out injured - you come back in such a demanding period and you have a little bit of a problem".

"This is a Liverpool team that score plenty of goals and don't let in any goals". They've won the title.

Guardiola said after the game it was effectively win or bust for his team's chances, arguing that if they dropped any more points, it'd be over.

Meanwhile, Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock has confirmed that they are interested in signing Robertson's team-mate Nathaniel Clyne. That can happen. Tomorrow we can lose, then again against Liverpool and again in the FA Cup.
