Turkey seeks warrant for NBA player Enes Kanter

Turkey seeks warrant for NBA player Enes Kanter

Kanter's Turkish passport was canceled in 2017 and he was held for a time at a Romania airport before returning to the U.S.as part of the fallout.

New York Knicks forward Enes Kanter is on the Turkish government's radar due to possible ties to a terrorist organization according to The Associated Press.

Rubio said he takes a different approach to foreign policy negotiations than Trump, who has not publicly commented on Kanter's situation. According to Interpol's website, no red notice has been issued for Kanter. He called the Turkish president "the Hitler of our century", and has made it abundantly clear that leaving the US or Canada could jeopardize his safety.

Kanter, who plays for the New York Knicks, is a vocal critic of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and has feuded for years with the country's government, which alleges that Kanter is a terrorist because of his support for Gülen.

Kanter responded on Twitter on Wednesday, tweeting, "Turkish Government cannot present any single piece of evidence of my wrongdoing". Gulen denies the accusation, but the failed coup attempt reportedly has led to thousands being punished in Turkey.

The Istanbul prosecutors' office was not immediately available to comment on the report on Wednesday.

"There's a chance that I can get killed out there", Kanter said earlier this month.

While he was unable to go with his team to London, Kanter made a decision to use his free time to meet with Sen.

He even posted a photo of a travel document on social media, making it clear his issue was his safety because of Mr Erdogan, whom he has referred to as "the Hitler of our century".

"I do have reason to believe that the Turkish government under Erdogan views Americans and arresting Americans and holding Americans as a valuable leverage point, a concession they can give the US government in exchange for some policy", Rubio said. "But if I step outside of America, it will be a very unsafe situation. I feel very safe", Kanter said.

Kanter was attempting to get back to the US after being forced to flee Indonesia because the Turkish government warned Indonesian authorities that he was risky.
