Twitter reacts to Maroon 5's lackluster Super Bowl halftime performance

The lights/effects: I enjoyed seeing the lights and effects while Maroon 5 performed.

But the build-up to this year's event had been marred by controversy, with stars including Rihanna reportedly turning down the gig to show support for quarter-back Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick helped start a wave of protests by kneeling during the USA national anthem to raise awareness to police brutality, racial inequality and other social issues.

Travis did some stage-diving, and then a gospel choir came out, as Maroon 5 sang their hit song "She Will Be Loved".

One fan suggested Levine looked bored after a first half that only included three points scored.

Another tweeted: "It's really sad that Adam Levine had to stoop so low to take his shirt off to get great reviews instead of his actual singing talent". The sportswear giant has been a prominent supporter of Kaepernick.

One part of the show that did win viewers over was a fleeting tribute to Stephen Hillenburg, the Spongebob Squarepants creator who died in November 2018.

The arrival of SpongeBob heralded the appearance of Travis Scott, who busted out his now-classic "Sicko Mode", which some have noted is the Bohemian Rhapsody of our times.

The addition of Big Boi, who is more synonymous with his native Atlanta than Coca Cola and streets named "Peachtree", to the performance roster, along with fellow rapper Scott, did little to appease critics.

The half-time show is a necessarily star-powered event, and so as long as the performer has about a half-dozen recognizable hits to play, disaster is nearly always averted.

The 35-strong list included "stand", "kneel", "overcome" and "educate".

'We thank our fans for making our dreams possible. "This is the show that's going to have the biggest hip hop presence that there's ever been".

Another described it as: "Very poor".

The game will be broadcast on CBS, and that's where the halftime show can be seen, as well.
