Democrat flip-flops over racist school photo as resignation pressure grows

Democrat Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia just stated, "I believe that I am not either of the people in that photo". "I am not and will not excuse the content of the photo". But Saunders said it wasn't his call to say whether the governor should resign. And so did Donald Trump.

"It doesn't matter whether he was in the photo, or not in the photo at this point", he said on CNN's "State of the Union". She has told NBC's "Meet the Press" that the Virginia governor knew this picture was there and could've been open about it decades ago with African-Americans that he's close to.

He also said, "That is not me in that photo".

The racist photo from Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam's 1984 yearbook was reportedly surfaced by an ex-classmate offended by Northam's recent comments about abortion. It shows a person wearing blackface and another in a Ku Klux Klan robe. "Democrats who have called out President Trump for his racist remarks can not try to sweep this one under the rug just because Ralph Northam is one of their own".

Northam was pushed repeatedly by reporters to explain why he issued an apology if he wasn't in the photograph. He said he's never worn a KKK uniform.

"I recognize that it will take time and serious effort to heal the damage this conduct has caused". There is no Jim Crow, no massive resistance to school desegregation, no Doug Wilder becoming the nation's first black governor since Reconstruction.

A state holiday honouring Confederate Generals Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson is a perennial source of discontent. But once that picture where the blackface and the Klansman came out, there is no way you can continue to be the governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Later, though, he told friends and lawmakers he didn't think he was in the photo.

Fairfax said he was "shocked and saddened" by the yearbook photograph and that Northam had apologized to him personally.

Fox News obtained a copy of 1984 yearbook page from the Eastern Virginia Medical School library in Norfolk. He said the school was convening an "urgent meeting" of senior leadership and board members. "I did not purchase the EVMS yearbook and I was unaware of what was on my page".

It turned out to be the flawless pedigree in the 2017 gubernatorial race, when Northam easily won after presenting himself as the soothing antidote to President Donald Trump's polarizing style. Jesse Jackson was running for president.

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker also called for Northam to step down. "Governor Northam should step down, seek forgiveness, and through good deeds earn the respect of the African-American Community".

Both of Virginia's US senators, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, joined the dean of Virginia's congressional delegation, Rep. Bobby Scott, in saying they no longer believe Northam can serve effectively.

Earlier in the day, others also called on him to step down. "But if he had been more of an ordinary politician, that press conference probably wouldn't have gone as badly as it did", said University of Mary Washington political science professor Stephen Farnsworth. It's unclear who the people in the picture are, but the rest of the page is filled with pictures of Northam and lists his undergraduate alma mater and other information about him.

Miller said if people were "offended by everything in this world ... there would be no existence". "Changing his public story today now casts further doubt on his ability to regain that trust". I think blackface is always wrong.

Historically, blackface was a form of theatrical make-up used predominantly by white performers to represent a caricature of a black person that often times contributed to the spread of racial stereotypes. His rapid rise, including a stint as lieutenant governor, was powered more by his biography than political charisma or know-how. Kamala Harris, a California Democrat, posted on Twitter in her statement urging Northam to resign.
