Trump calls for end of resistance politics in State of Union

The White House has previewed a similar theme of unity for the president's address, but Abrams' advisers say she wants to lay out a more inclusive vision that spans racial, geographic and cultural divides. He said the US has "the hottest economy anywhere in the world".

"Congratulations; that's great", he said, as the women renewed their loud applause.

"While I acknowledged the results of the 2018 election here in Georgia, I did not and we can not accept efforts to undermine our right to vote", she said.

There are clear signs that the showdown over the border wall has dinged the president: The most recent Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll had Trump's approval rating at a shade over 39 percent, the lowest it has been since early last October.

Even among this pro-Trump audience, however, a majority said they did not think the President would succeed in increasing cooperation between Democrats and Republicans - 53% said Trump would not succeed in that effort, while 39% said that he would.

White has continued to serve as symbol for women in politics. The nationally televised speech was delayed for one week, after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi withdrew her invitation during the 35-day government shutdown. Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey.

Speaking from Atlanta, Abrams calls the shutdown a political stunt that "defied every tenet of fairness and abandoned not just our people, but our values".

But she appeared to smirk, chuckle, shake her head or roll her eyes several times, including when Trump called for an end to "ridiculous partisan investigations" and when he spoke about the MS-13 gang traversing the southern border.

Trump derided Abrams as "unqualified" for statewide office during her gubernatorial campaign.

The photograph shows Pelosi, with pursed lips and looking directly at Trump, making a pointed, exaggerated hand clap, in a memorable image captured by New York Times photojournalist Doug Mills and taken by the internet to be a real, live clap back.

They paid tribute to the women who came before them and gave a nod to their own achievement, as more women than ever are now representatives in the House.

"If there is going to be peace and legislation, there can not be war and investigation", Trump said.

The increase is due to population growth - and not something Trump can credit to any of his policies.

The president said it was time for USA troops in Syria to return home - but did not repeat a timescale for withdrawal, which in December he said would be immediate.

"But none of these ambitions are possible without the bedrock guarantee of our right to vote", she said. Then he noted the record number of women in Congress. He again called for bringing American troops home from Syria and Afghanistan. They sat with Mrs. Trump during the address.
