Measles Outbreak Appears To Be Increasing Vaccination Rates

"While data indicate exceptionally high immunisation coverage at regional level, they also reflect a record number affected and killed by the disease". Experts says the Islamic State has played a role too.

In 34 of these countries, estimated coverage with a second dose of measles vaccine was below 95 perc ent.

That helps explain why public health officials get so concerned when outbreaks occur, which they have been with increasing frequency in recent years.

The Washington State Health Department hasn't identified "patient zero" in the Clark County measles outbreak that has tallied 50 confirmed cases in Clark County and 55 total cases in Washington and OR since January 1.

Similar outbreaks have been occurring in Europe: In 2017, there were 25,863 cases of measles; previous year, that surged to more than 82,000.

World Health Organization said "uneven progress between and within countries" was to blame.

Dr. Hotez said that the research team is now conducting a follow-up study to investigate the social and political demographics of the urban and rural hotspot areas to help public health officials understand the vaccine hesitancy movement. It is also easily preventable through vaccination. Health investigators in the city have determined that the first case was identified in an unvaccinated child who was exposed to measles during travel to Israel. The disease, which has spread rapidly between individuals who never received their childhood vaccines to prevent it, prompted officials to declare a state of emergency out of fear that it would continue to spread.

Measles immunisation coverage has fallen in a dozen European Union countries since 2010, and 70 percent of countries with the lowest vaccine confidence in the world were in Europe. There were no new confirmed cases of measles Tuesday - the first time in weeks.

"There's no reason we should be having this outbreak", says Melnick.

"The measles vaccine isn't flawless, but one dose is 93 percent effective at preventing illness", said Dr. Alan Melnick of the Clark County Public Health Department.

So far in the US this year, about 80 cases of measles have been reported, with two outbreaks ongoing in Washington and NY states.

In the United Kingdom, there were 953 measles cases past year.

"We are feeling this in every country even if at a national level we have good health policies in place".

Depending on the relevant state and territory health departments, in Australia, there are some governmen-funded catch up vaccination programs for refugees and migrants.

Vaccination rates in King County - where the other single measles case in Washington was is located - also went up.
