Wells Fargo reports widespread outages on mobile app and online banking

Mobile and Online Banking systems are operational, with the exception of some features, such as consumer credit card and mortgage balances, that were still being restored.

Wells Fargo has dealt with a string of controversies in recent years.

On its Facebook page, Wells told customers late Thursday that the problems were "a contained issue affecting one of our facilities, and not due to any cybersecurity event or attack. I know I'm one that's leaving", one Twitter user wrote.

Although the bank said the outages were "intermittent, customers tweeted that they had been unable to access their accounts all day".

This was the second outage this month at Wells Fargo. In December, Wells Fargo agreed to pay $575 million to settle a range of allegations from 50 states and the District of Columbia over those issues. On Feb. 1, the company also reported an outage.

According to fire chief Tim Boehlke, of Lake Johanna Fire Department, the downtime kicked off at a Wells Fargo data center in Shoreview, Minnesota. "We apologize for the inconvenience", Wells Fargo tweeted just after 8 a.m. It could take a while to restore power and undo the effects of the suppression system.

Other customers were joking that the system outage was helping them spend less money.

Wells Fargo, headquartered in San Francisco, is among the nation's largest banks.
