Grammys 2019: They wore that? Fashions and photos from the red carpet

"This is going to be a special Grammys".

What will the final speech from Neil Portnow - who caused more than a little consternation past year when he said women needed to "step up" in order to secure broader inclusion - contain?

"Yes, we have so much more work to do, but this is a moment to be celebrated". "I relax more ... when I know that I am supported by other women ... and I feel like I can do anything".

Janelle Monae: Monae is up for two Grammys this year for album of the year for "Dirty Computer" and best music video for "PYNK".

Singer Lady Gaga poses at the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles, California, US, January 27, 2019.

This year, 5 of the 8 Album of the Year nominations went to female artists: Cardi B, Carlile, Monae, R&B prodigy H.E.R. and country star Kacey Musgraves.

Lady Gaga - who will be performing tonight without Bradley Cooper, who is in Britain, attending the BAFTAs - won best song written for visual media for, of course, "Shallow" from A Star Is Born. He'll be joined on stage to perform with the Red Hot Chili Peppers. "I am such a misfit", she said. He later acknowledged that it was a "poor choice of words", and his much-criticized remarks forced the academy to launch a new task force focused on inclusion and diversity.

The lead up to this year's Grammys hasn't been completely smooth though. She responded on Twitter and said she "can pull together a performance over night and you know that, Ken".

"I've kept my mouth shut but now you're lying about me", she tweeted. "Thank you for being my island", she said.

"I've got nothing to say, I'm speechless", she said.

This year, Academy voters did pass on nominating perennial favourites like Taylor Swift for the top three prizes of Album, Record and Song of the Year, relegating pop stars who reigned in years prior to lesser categories. The nominations are dominated by Drake and Kendrick Lamar, with eight and seven nods, respectively.

Women were strongly represented at this year's Grammys.

Additionally, J Balvin, Young Thug, Ricky Martin and Arturo Sandoval will join Cabello for the show's opening, while Fantasia, Yolanda Adams and Andra Day will pay homage to the late Aretha Franklin. Falguni "Falu" Shah is nominated in Best Children's Album category for her album Falu's Bazaar, Snatam Kaur Khalsa is nominated in New Age Album category for his album Beloved and Prashant Mistry (Engine-Earz Experiment) is nominated in Best Immersive Audio Album category for his album Symbol.

"I've been able to find zen moments leading up to all this".
