Tiger Woods to meet Rory McIlroy in last 16 at WGC

Tiger Woods to meet Rory McIlroy in last 16 at WGC

Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Sergio Garcia are some of the 64 best players in the world who join the only individual match-play event on the PGA TOUR schedule.

He still has to win four matches, starting with a big one Saturday morning.

"Good gracious. Don't you think for a minute he's not lit up", commentators said of the feat. So McIlroy would dust the old man, right? Wise never trailed, was 2 up at the turn and won four of the next five holes to close out Snedeker.

He was only about 100 feet from the hole, but McIlroy pitched long, over the green, and with spectators scurrying out of the way, the ball came to rest against a wooden bulkhead.

The 10th hole demonstrated a bit of vintage Woods gamesmanship. Woods didn't even have to putt to win a hole he appeared certain to lose.

Woods ended the match after McIlroy almost holed a long birdie putt at the 17th.

McIlroy headed into the last-16 clash after losing just three holes during the group stage but found himself three down after 10 and was set for an early departure on Saturday afternoon.

What's odd is, McIlroy has already crafted a Hall of Fame-worthy career.

Get push notifications with news, features and more. He entered the Sunday of last year's Masters paired with Patrick Reed in the final group. and did exactly nothing to slow Reed's march to the green jacket that's eluded McIlroy.

It looked a costly mistake. Then McIlroy, buoyed by the win and taking advantage of suddenly swirling winds, popping a long birdie to win another hole.

And just like that, it all vanished. And when he launched a staggering 395-yard drive down the centre of the fairway on the par-five 16th, and Woods then hit his tee-shot under the lip of a fairway bunker, it seemed inevitable that the match would soon be level. After considering a drop, McIlroy took an unplayable lie, had to return to the original spot, found the front bunker and then blasted out - before conceding. He turned the 16th into a dog's breakfast of a hole, and turned a potential tie into a two-shot deficit with two shots to go.

Given Woods had the honour on the 13th tee, which is a driveable par 4 over water, he said the decision to lay up with an iron was a tactical move.

"I played pretty consistent the entire day", Woods said. I was fortunate to come out on top.
