Magic Johnson and Luke Walton Did Not Speak for 'Weeks'

Just prior to the start of their final game of the season, Magic Johnson made a decision to step down as president of basketball operations.

Magic Johnson quit on the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, which could mean a lot of things for the iconic National Basketball Association franchise, though the biggest immediate one might be the future of head coach Luke Walton. "I saw the emotion and I saw the love he has for this organization and the difficulty that decision was for him". "The draft is not here".

The first and most obvious impact will be during free agency. Somebody can be in here to recruit.

"I want to go back to having fun", Johnson said.

"Somebody is going to have to tell my boss, because I know she's going to be sick", Johnson said.

Johnson said he wants to get back to the simpler life he enjoyed before taking over the Lakers just over two years ago.

The team is still assessing Johnson's decision, but general manager Rob Pelinka will stay in his job, and, if anything, his power will grow, sources told Shelburne.
"Everybody wanted the Lakers to turn around tomorrow, and I explained (it's not that simple) that when I took the job".

Reports indicated that Magic hadn't committed all of his energy to the Lakers and that it was starting to affect the franchise.

Johnson said he had not informed Buss or Pelinka of his decision before talking to reporters.

The Lakers, who have been playing without James in the lineup for weeks, lost 104-101 to Portland following Johnson' announcement. The league also investigated contact with Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons but ultimately ruled that Johnson had not violated the league's tampering rules. He said he loves Jeanie Buss like a sister. "Now I don't have to worry about (talking about players)". The disappointing season for the Lakers isn't all because of the coaching staff, as injuries really derailed their season. It might not even matter who they bring in to replace Walton. The Lakers are expected to try and recruit another superstar to play with James.

Johnson retired in 1991 after he tested positive for HIV, but later returned briefly to the Lakers as a player and a coach.
