Magic Johnson steps down as Lakers president

Magic Johnson fought back tears while he broke the news of his resignation to reporters on Tuesday.

Jeanie Buss speaks to Kobe Bryant at Bryant's jersey retirement ceremony during halftime of a basketball game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors at Staples Center on December 18, 2017 in Los Angeles, California.

In a surprise move that shocked basketball fans, Magic Johnson announced today that he's stepping down as the Los Angeles Lakers' President of Basketball of Operations.

"I had more fun when I was able to be the big brother and the ambassador to everybody".

Johnson said that he made his announcement before telling Jeanie Buss, the owner of the Lakers. She said during a radio interview last week, "I will always defer to Magic". "Because I knew I would be crying like a baby in front of her".

It turns out Johnson prefers his life before he took the role, and wants to have more freedom.

Johnson's decision to leave his role sent shockwaves throughout the franchise and the National Basketball Association as a world, particularly as the Lakers face a potentially future-defining summer. I'm gonna go back to that handsome life.

"I like Luke a lot", said Johnson.

Besides that, he wasn't very good in two years on the job as the team's playoff drought reached six seasons.

"What I didn't like is the backstabbing and the whispering", Johnson said.

"Earvin, I loved working side by side with you", Buss wrote. "I can't help young men who want me to help them", he said.

Johnson admitted he was considering firing Walton, even though the head coach has still two years left on his contract. "He will always be not only a Lakers icon, but our family".

Johnson repeatedly cited the need for freedom of interaction and expression with other players as a key reason behind his decision.

"Tomorrow, I would have to effect somebody's life - ruin their life", he said.

Johnson, a Hall of Famer from his playing days with the Lakers, said he is resigning because he doesn't enjoy the job.
