Luke Walton out as Lakers coach after 3 losing seasons

Walton is the first choice of general manager Vlade Divac.

Walton spent two seasons at the helm of a team that struggled to find the right pieces to complement 15-time All-Star LeBron James in his first season in Los Angeles.

"Tomorrow I would have to affect someone's livelihood and their life", Johnson said that night, later alluding to Lakers owner Jeanie Buss. "This franchise and the city will always be special to me and my family".

Walton was sacked after a tumultuous 37-45 season. "We wish Luke and his family the best of luck moving forward".

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr called Walton "one of the best human beings in the National Basketball Association".

Walton finishes his tenure with a 98-148 record.

Steve Kerr feels for Luke Walton and Kerr shares what Los Angeles is losing by parting ways with Walton. "They're losing a guy who knows the game as well as anybody I've ever met".

After failing to make the playoffs, both the Kings and Lakers were clearly looking to shake things up, and though things didn't necessarily go Walton's way in L.A., he could potentially benefit from a fresh start in Sacramento.

Luke Walton will be fine. Collectively, Lakers players missed more than 210 games due to injuries and the team used more than 25 different starting lineups this season.

It sure tells you everything that Walton was willing to move on from what was once his dream job just as Sacramento found itself with a coaching opening for, oh, the 723rd time in the last dozen seasons.

"It affected us a lot", guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope said.
