Luke Walton, Monty Williams the early favorites for Kings job

Luke Walton, Monty Williams the early favorites for Kings job

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Divac is planning to fire head coach Dave Joerger on Thursday in a face-to-face meeting.

The Kings finished with a 39-43 record on the season.

USA Today reporter Sam Amick confirmed that Walton is the top choice in Sacramento.

The 45-year-old has had a rough go of things as a head coach in the National Basketball Association.

The Sacramento Kings didn't make the playoffs this season, but you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who thought they didn't wildly exceed expectations.

"Some have speculated Joerger, a native of Minnesota, could be interested in potential head coaching vacancies with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Chicago Bulls", Jason Anderson of the Sacramento Bee wrote. Sacramento missed the playoffs for the third straight season under Joerger, going 98-148 (.398) overall during his tenure. Joerger was (9-13) in 22 playoff games with the Grizzlies.

The Kings, coming off their most successful season in more than a decade, didn't waste any time in looking to the future.

Although Sacramento's drastic improvement this season is one of the feel-good stories of the 2018-19 campaign, tension surrounding Joerger and his long-term with the franchise isn't new. Many people failed to notice because the Los Angeles Lakers were floundering much worse.

His first decision of the day appears to be the dismissal of assistant general manager Brandon Williams. "We have to believe in them and give them a chance to take advantage of their work and talent".

Walton had not made the playoffs as a full-time head coach yet, while Jason Kidd's Milwaukee teams regressed during his time there.
