Man United 'got away with it' against West Ham, admits Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted on Saturday that Manchester United will have to improve significantly on their performance against West Ham if they are to knock Barcelona out of the Champions League.

Third place would guarantee United qualification for the Champions League - which by Solskjaer's calculation would mean beating at least one out of second-placed Manchester City and Chelsea, who they host in consecutive games at Old Trafford this month.

Paul Pogba scored both the goals through penalty-kicks for United. Ander Herrera is set to leave on a free transfer with the midfielder ready to commit his future to Paris Saint-Germain while Juan Mata's contract is also up in the summer.

West Ham had a goal harshly ruled out for offside, hit the crossbar and saw David de Gea make a wonder save to deny Michail Antonio giving them a late lead.

Minutes later, United were given their second penalty of the match.

"You're never happy when you don't win games, but it's been a period now where we've played some good teams", the former Norway striker told a news conference ahead of Saturday's match against West Ham.

"He's available and we've got Jonah [Phil Jones], who could also play there".

But they still trail Chelsea by two points and Spurs by three points in the exciting race for the final two Champions League spots.

"We're under no illusion it's going to be hard work and there will be some tough decisions made by me, Mick [Phelan, the assistant manager] and the club".

Manchester United have moved into fifth with the win, sitting on 64 points from 33 games.

"We do not want people like this associated with West Ham".

Manchester United players face a "survival of the fittest" to remain at the club, according to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"Of course it's hard, but if you want to be a top team you have to play big Champions League games, and the weekend after it's the Premier League", De Gea said.

"I don't understand that".

United now travel to the Nou Camp with the hard task of beating Barcelona at home but they will feel confident given their heroics against PSG in the last round.
