Mayor Pete Campaign Says Candidate Raised Whopping $1 Million Hours After Announcement

Mayor Pete Buttigieg (BOO'-tuh-juhj) of South Bend, Indiana, is expected to make his Democratic run for president official during a rally later Sunday in the city where he launched his political career less than a decade ago.

The setting for Buttigieg's announcement was perhaps fitting for the two-term mayor: He is credited for helping South Bend, an industrial hub and the former headquarters of the famous but now-defunct Studebaker automobile brand, reimagine itself and look to the future.

She says she's "very proud" of the women in the contest and says anyone running would be better than President Donald Trump.

The presidential hopeful has surged to third place in early Iowa and New Hampshire popularity polls of Democratic voters, behind Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.

If elected, Buttigieg, a veteran of Afghanistan, would be the first openly gay president and the youngest.

"We have changed our trajectory", Buttigieg said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says Democrats don't have to... Plus some residents of South Bend are disappointed in Buttigieg's town-revival efforts, arguing that they prioritize white and wealthy neighborhoods at the expense of people of color and the poor. "I'm here to join you to make a little news". During an appearance on Fox News, White House counselor Kellyanne Conway called Medicare-for-all "a bad deal for America".

"I am impressed by the people standing inside", he said before moving indoors.

It has been a whirlwind few weeks for Buttigieg: The mayor has crisscrossed the country looking to seize on the boost he received from a well-reviewed CNN town hall in early March, hopscotching between early nominating states and a string of fundraisers in Democratic strongholds like San Francisco, Chicago and NY. "We want to be more like a startup, and we want to build in a smart way and a steady way".

The Sunday announcement moves Buttigieg's campaign past the exploratory stage that proved successful in drumming up national attention.

Sanders' income topped $1 million for the first time in 2016, when he ran for president.

Pete Buttigieg, the little-known IN mayor who has risen to prominence IN the early stages of the 2020 Democratic presidential race, made his official campaign entrance Sunday by claiming the mantle of a youthful generation ready to reshape the country.

Under fire from President Donald Trump and Republicans for the astronomical price tag of Medicare for All, some Democratic presidential candidates who support the plan also say it could be one of several ways to achieve more affordable coverage and lower the number of uninsured people.

He was first elected mayor of South Bend, Indiana in 2011, making him the youngest mayor of a USA city with at least 100,000 residents.

Buttigieg will follow up his announcement with a trip to NY for a low-dollar fundraiser in Brooklyn on Monday, followed by a two-day trip to Iowa on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"The coastal elites, I don't think they've ever loved a mid-westerner as much as they love Pete", Fox News host and prominent critic Laura Ingraham told viewers during an eight-minute segment last week. He was re-elected to the post in 2014 with a whopping 80% of the vote.

Pointing to South Bend's crime and urban blight, Republicans sought to tarnish Buttigieg's image as mayor.
