IL bill proposes Trump showing tax returns to appear on 2020 ballot

Sanders' book, "Our Revolution", was released in November 2016, a week after Donald Trump won the presidency.

Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders speaks during a gathering of the National Action Network April 5, 2019 in NY.

In 2009, the first year of returns Sanders released on Monday, he had an adjusted gross income of $314,742.

"Center for American Progress leader Neera Tanden repeatedly calls for unity while simultaneously maligning my staff and supporters and belittling progressive ideas", Sanders writes. "I worry that the corporate money CAP is receiving is inordinately and inappropriately influencing the role it is playing in the progressive movement".

"As a strong proponent of transparency, the senator hopes President Trump and all Democratic primary candidates will disclose their tax returns", Sanders campaign manager Faiz Shakir said in a statement.

Sanders said that: "These tax returns show that our family has been fortunate".

'My view has always been that we need a progressive tax system which demands that the wealthiest people in this country finally start paying their fair share of taxes, ' he said.

Sanders, writing in the April 13 letter, criticized the powerful Democratic Party establishment group for mocking his appearance and personal income in a piece published on ThinkProgress, which operates under the CAP umbrella. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Kamala Harris of California and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota - have released tax records to varying degrees.

The exchange threatens to shred an already frayed public détente between the wider circles surrounding both Sanders and Clinton, who fought a bitter 2016 presidential primary that still looms large in the minds of many Democrats - if only because they fear a divisive replay in 2020. I think the middle class continues to struggle, and I think what you're seeing here in Gary is not unreflective of what's going on in many, many other parts of our community, ' he contended in IN on Saturday.

CAP responded to the letter, which was first reported by the New York Times, by insisting it did not interfere with or guide ThinkProgress' work.

On Monday, Sanders took a more measured tone in releasing his returns, making reference to his upbringing in a Brooklyn family of limited financial resources. "If you write a best-selling book, you can be a millionaire, too".

The bill, which still requires approval by the Prairie State's House of Representatives, comes amid a growing row in Washington over Mr Trump's unprecedented refusal to make publicly available his income tax returns.
