Bernie Sanders Releases 10 Years of Tax Returns

In a statement released by his campaign, Sanders noted that while the returns show his family is fortunate, he also grew up with a "stress of income insecurity" that informs his political views.

ONE BY ONE, Democratic presidential hopefuls are releasing their tax returns.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said Sunday that Democrats were not smart enough to understand Mr. Trump's tax returns, a new defense of Mr.Trump's indefensible refusal to come clean that hardly rises above the level of a schoolyard insult. He also challenged Trump to release his tax returns. President Trump watches your network a little bit, right?

Former Sanders surrogate Jonathan Tasini in an email called the ThinkProgress clip "despicable" and said he initially "thought it was a Republican attack video masquerading as a Democratic production".

Sanders faced criticism for only releasing his 2014 returns during his 2016 Democratic primary battle with Hillary Clinton, a millionaire whom he often derided for giving paid speeches to Wall Street. "Please do the same".

Indeed, the sight of any Democrat - much less a democratic socialist running for the party's presidential nomination - in a venue so closely aligned with the Trump administration, is an unusual one. That year, their adjusted gross income was $1,062,626, and they paid a total of $372,368 in taxes at a 35 percent tax rate.

According to the Economic Policy Institute, families in the United States earning $421,926 or more a year are part of this group. Sanders denied that he vilifies wealthy Americans, repeating his oft-cited talking point that wealthy Americans should pay their "fair share". By 2018, his wife, 69, was also taking Social Security, providing the couple with almost $52,000 for the year. At a campaign stop in Gary, Indiana, a reporter asked Sanders whether his millionaire status was at odds with his populist economic message.

"You can volunteer, too", Sanders interrupted. The impact of his book contracts is most evident in Sanders' return for 2017, when he and his wife reported wages of US$139,549 and business income - most of it from books - of US$961,784.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders released 10 years' worth of tax returns Monday.

Sanders has not announced any substantive changes to the income tax system during his 2020 run.

As U.S. Democrats emphasize building their 2020 presidential campaigns on grassroots support, fewer than half amassed at least 50 percent of their early financial backing from small-dollar donations, a Reuters analysis found.

Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Kamala Harris of California, as well as Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, have all already made their 2018 tax returns public. To see older returns, visit his campaign's website.

Warren released 10 years of her tax returns last year and followed with an 11th year of released returns last week. The tax returns are from 2009 to 2018. But after the House Ways and Means Committee requested them, Trump's acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, said earlier this month that Trump would "never" turn them over.
