Two English clubs through to Champions League semis

Two English clubs through to Champions League semis

Ajax are the first team in Champions League history to make the semi-finals after surviving three qualifying rounds, and will now meet Manchester City or Tottenham in the last four.

Former Arsenal player, Paul Merson, is confident that Tottenham will reach the Champions League final, as they will be, "too strong" for Ajax. They have played twice, and it hasn't happened since 1966 in the European Cup, now known as the Champions League.

The KNVB is committed to giving teams at least two full days of rest between games and moving Ajax's scheduled match against De Graafschap forward to April 27 is problematic as that date marks the national holiday of Koningsdag.

"His way of playing fits us and I like it. Ajax are a training club that sells, but we have not had talks".

They have lost all four UEFA Competition ties when they have lost 2-0 away from home in the first leg.

He added his fifth goal in three Champions League matches in the 28th minute on Tuesday, heading in a Miralem Pjanic corner.

De Jong helped Ajax to the semi-finals on Tuesday night as the Eredivisie came from behind to record a stunning win over Juventus in Italy.

Juventus have won the Champions League twice, most recently in 1996 when they beat Ajax in the final.

Ajax's strike-force of 22-year-old Neres, Dusan Tadic and Hakim Ziyech have proven effective this season.

"We will see who is coming to the semi-final and then we have to show the same".

Barcelona are close to reaching an agreement to sign defender Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax, club sources have told ESPN FC.

Sterling's equalizer was ruled out by the referee, who watched the goal position on the VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system.

Such a commanding performance from 19-year-old De Ligt - he made a game-high 10 clearances - has become commonplace despite his tender age.

Juve's intention was clear when it paid Madrid a €112million fee for Ronaldo - to win the Champions League for the first time in 23 years.

"Ajax deserved to qualify and you saw that on the pitch", said Juventus president Andrea Agnelli, who said Allegri would be continuing as coach. The Portuguese has also scored 51% of his total goals in the competition in the knockout stages - that's 61 out of that accumulated 125 - and from the Quarter-Finals has an astonishing 100% progression to the next round from his 11 appearances, having assisted with 24 goals in that particular stage.

At Juventus's Allianz Stadium on Tuesday night Ronaldo, a five-time victor of the tournament, headed the Italian hosts in front from a first-half corner.
