National Basketball Association insider reveals breakthrough in search for new head coach

According to the Los Angeles Times, Tyronn Lue came out swinging in his interview for the Lakers' head coaching position.

The Lakers also interviewed Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard, but he's viewed as a distant third in the race. Owner Jeanie Buss and general manager Rob Pelinka will reportedly lead a group that's set to interview Monty Williams for a second time.

And they held meetings with both Lue and Monty Williams earlier this week. By multiple reports, those names are the most likely candidates for the coaching job.

Williams meanwhile is now the assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers, who are about to begin their playoffs conference semifinals against the Toronto Raptors.

The Lakers could have a lot of competition for Williams.

Williams is an assistant coach for the Philadelphia 76ers, and he'll be on the bench as the team looks to make a run to the 2019 NBA Finals. It sounds like Monty Williams will end up with an official offer sooner than later. The Suns are guaranteed to have a high selection in the 2019 NBA Draft, and they've got as good of a chance as anyone to land Zion Williamson. He is from the DMV-area, as is Durant and he used to coach Anthony Davis when he was the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans. Not for one of the game's three best players, but in a salary dump to free up cap space for the Lakers' summer signings.

Nance wanted some assurance that the Lakers wouldn't be moving him in the near future, as he wanted to buy a house in Los Angeles. The Akron, Ohio native signed a four-year, $44.8 million contract extension with the Cavs in October 2018.
