Google announces more affordable Pixel 3a and 3a XL, starting at $399

There have been reports earlier about the upcoming Google Pixel 3a and the Pixel 3a XL, suggesting the expected prices, which are believed to be priced around $399 (around Rs 28,000) and other reports were suggesting around Rs 42,000 as well.

The event will kick start on Tuesday, May 7 from 10 AM Pacific time (10:30 pm IST), in Mountain View, California.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai and other executives will glance at the many features and improvements coming to Android, Google Assistant, and many other apps and services over the next year. Also, going by the trends in the mid-range segment, Google has got the 3.5mm headphone jack back along with better battery life in the two smartphones. The 3a are made of plastic and they feel lighter in the hand.

However, in the mid-range market Google hopes it can leverage its software prowess to offer something more appealing than Chinese rivals such as Huawei's Honor and Samsung's mid-range A series.

Nearly everyone can agree on two things about Google's Pixel 3 and 3 XL phones: They've got incredible cameras (especially Night Sight mode), and they're a bit too expensive (at $799 and $899, respectively).

The screen on the Google Pixel 3a is unbroken, with prominent bezels to the top and bottom of the front, whereas the OnePlus 6T has a smaller "teardrop" notch that houses the front-facing camera - for some phone users this may be an important point to differentiate the devices, but you'll still have more screen space on the latter phone.

The Pixel 3a is available today in 13 markets. Expectedly, though not mentioned on the leaked sheet, the Pixel 3a will boot Google'sAndroid 9 out of the box, while it will get a 64GB storage space. Additionally, the phones have been hinted to support fast charging via USB-C. But they also have the same fantastic camera found on their more expensive siblings- including the ability to do Night Sight and Portrait Mode-not to mention improved battery life and a gosh dang headphone jack.

The camera on the Pixel 3a is perhaps its best feature.

Instead of glass, the Pixel 3a uses polycarbonate for its exterior. "This is a major "reset" on its Pixel strategy".

No pricing info was included this time, but a previous leak suggested that the Google Pixel 3a will retail for $649 in Canada ($482 USA / £369) while the Google Pixel 3a XL will sell for $799 Canadian ($594 U.S. / £454). The usual suspects include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, back-mounted fingerprint sensors, and all the other bells and whistles. There is unlimited photo backup to Google Photos but in high quality and not original quality.

The Pixel 3a isn't a proper successor to the Nexus phones that so many enthusiasts (myself included) loved.

In news that will surprise no one, Google's Android Q beta that goes live today will not be available for any Galaxy phones.
