Famously, she recorded the song in less than 15 minutes.

In 2011, Day was quoted saying "I love life".

In her 1976 tell-all autobiography, Doris Day: Her Own Story, Day described her squeaky-clean reputation as "unfortunate".

Another Twitter user said: "Gutted to hear of the death of the wonderful Doris Day having lived her best life to the grand age of 97. But I am Miss Chastity Belt, and that's all there is to it". "I just about fell apart", she later recalled. "Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Novak?"

"Doris had a wonderful jazz vibrato voice and could have been one of the top jazz singers", said Frankie Laine, who sang a duet with Day on Sugarbush.

Of German parentage, the actress was born Mary Ann Von Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio on April 3, 1922.

In the 1930s, attracted to music and dance, she formed part of a dance duo - but that ended after a horrific accident in which her leg was crushed when a auto she was riding in was hit by a train.

She began her career as a big band singer in 1939 and her popularity increased with her first hit "Sentimental Journey".

Disillusionment grew in the 1960s when she discovered that failed investments by her third husband, Martin Melcher, left her deeply in debt.

The latter two songs also won Academy Awards for Best Original Song in the 1950s.

A series of musicals followed with Day often playing a singer trying to break into the entertainment world: "My Dream Is Yours" in 1949, "It's a Great Feeling" in 1949 and "Tea for Two" in 1950. I'm young at heart and I love to laugh.

Day was among the most popular screen actresses in history, starring in dramas, musicals and innocent sex comedies alongside leading men such as Frank Sinatra, Rock Hudson, Jimmy Stewart, James Cagney and Clark Gable.

The Associated Press was first to report the news of her death, which comes almost two months after the actress celebrated her birthday and shared a recent photo with PEOPLE.

Actor Antonio Banderas thanked Day for sharing her talent.

In 2011 Day made United Kingdom chart history when she became the oldest woman to score a top 10 album.

After retiring from performing, Day worked mainly with the Doris Day Animal Foundation, helping abused animals.

Details of death: Died at home in Carmel Valley, California of pneumonia at the age of 97.

Doris receiving her Lifetime Achievement Award Golden Globe in 1989. After a near-fatal auto crash that ended her hopes for a career as a dancer, she made the switch to singing.
