Russian Federation: U.S, allies 'exaggerating' importance of D-Day to WWII victory

- Tom Rice, a 97-year-old veteran, jumped with hundreds of other parachutists over Normandy on Wednesday to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Read recognized that a jump for someone his age could be risky: "I said my prayers about it and to my great my great surprise it seemed as though God was saying to me, "Go for it".

"I feel great", he said after the jump, per AP.

"It went ideal, flawless jump", Rice said after his most recent jump, according to The Associated Press.

Rice's D-Day jump on June 6, 1944, was with the US Army's 101st Airborne Division, with him landing safely despite the bullet hole - and him nearly never making it out of the plane.

Wednesday's event coincides with the last day of Mr Trump's state visit to Britain, where he has lavished praise on the USA ally and said the wartime bonds forged the "greatest alliance the world has ever known".

The jump was a precursor to the all out assault on Nazi positions alongside that stretch of coast which would begin the push into France which saw them marching into Berlin just 10 months later.

As for how his fallen comrades would have felt about his jump Wednesday, he said, "They would love it".

With the number of D-Day survivors dwindling, Rice said he represented "a whole generation", but admitted the painful memories of the war have always remained with him.

Further east at Omaha Beach, the 75th Ranger Regiment Wednesday recreated the famous Pointe Du Hoc climb, when more than 500 rangers scaled the cliffs the morning of June 6 to take on German defenses.

He added: "Some of them couldn't handle it".

Speaking at a weekly news conference in Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova offered a tribute to those who died on the western front of World War Two and said Moscow appreciated the Allied war effort.

Many Allied parachutists landed behind enemy lines ahead of the D-Day invasion. It bothers us all the time for what we did.

He wrote: "Although I would give anything to be back with you, I have not yet had any wish at all to back down from the job we have to do". "You can close the issue now".

The Battle of Normandy, codenamed Operation Overlord, was a turning point in the war, and helped bring about Nazi Germany's defeat in May 1945.

French President Emmanuel Macron, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and leaders and senior figures from 10 other countries are also due to attend.

D-Day established another front in Europe, locking Germany into conflict in France, Italy and Russian Federation.
