French Open whole matchday cancelled through rain

Rain delayed the start of play at Roland Garros on Wednesday where four singles quarter-final matches are scheduled on the main show courts.

In the latest surprise at a French Open filled with them, defending champion Simona Halep was knocked out in the quarterfinals with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to 17-year-old American Amanda Anisimova.

The second full-day washout at the French Open since 2000 made a mess of the schedule Wednesday and raised the possibility that the Grand Slam tournament will not finish on time.

Zverev never properly recovered from blowing his early chance, when he broke for 5-4 and served for the first set.

If Djokovic defeats Zverev, the Serb would reach the semifinals at the French Open for the first time since completing his grand slam collection in Paris in 2016.

"I was really happy to close it out as playing three sets in these heavy conditions does not sound like much fun", said the 24-year-old Keys.

Just one other example from this year at Roland Garros: The woman who beat three-time major champion Angelique Kerber in the first round, 81st-ranked Anastasia Potapova, exited in the second.

Novak Djokovic stretched his Grand Slam winning streak to 26 matches on Thursday, reaching the French Open semifinals as he pursues a fourth consecutive major trophy.

Fourth seed Dominic Thiem reached the semi-finals of the French Open for the fourth successive year with a dominant victory over Karen Khachanov. "Of course it's very important, because, I mean, we all hope that we're here for two weeks", he said.

"I had to do a lot of things that I usually don't do, a lot of management stuff, a lot of lawyer stuff, so things that I'm not used to doing", he said.

In 2012, the men's final between Nadal and Djokovic began on Sunday but was suspended in the fourth set and resumed Monday.

So, business as usual for the man who hasn't lost a Grand Slam match since a last-eight loss here a year ago. "So honestly, I couldn't ask for a better match", Anisimova said.

The 22-year-old has downed Djokovic in their two biggest clashes, in the Rome final on clay in 2017 and in last year's year-end championship finale in London.

Anisimova is the youngest American woman into the final four at Roland Garros since Jennifer Capriati was 14 in 1990.

"I think the longer I play or the further I go, I guess, in my career, the sense of history-making is only getting stronger".

After saving two break points in the opening game of the third set, Djokovic was momentarily jeered by the crowd on Court Phillipe-Chatrier as he flung his racket to the ground in frustration.

"It's a great joy to be in the semi-finals again". Djokovic dominated the second set, taking a 3-0 lead before Zverev could claim a point.
