New Border Apprehension Numbers Are In and They're Out of Control...Again

Border patrol facilities are not created to hold families with children as young as newborns, like the people who enter the U.S. daily.

Those numbers underpin the problems across the border.

May's apprehension numbers are not only the highest in the current fiscal year, but the highest in well over a decade. In addition to the large number of children and family units, authorities also apprehended more than 36,000 single adults.

Government inspectors last week announced that a 125-person facility in El Paso, Texas, held 700 people one day and 900 another day.

Last year, 396,579 undocumented people were apprehended after entering the country illegally, while in 2000 the figure was more than 1.6 million.

Most border crossers are from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, countries racked by gangs, violence and poverty.

Sanders noted that almost 680,000 people have been encountered so far this year on the southern border - more than the population of Miami and on pace to break records for the number of migrants encountered in a year, he said. Many are expected to eventually request asylum.

May apprehensions marked the highest monthly total in 13 years, Customs and Border Protection officials said. "For the first time in Border Patrol history, almost half of the adults we apprehended in April brought children".

CBP and Border Patrol continue to advocate for an overhaul of immigration policy as a means to deter the seemingly endless flow of asylum seekers arriving at the U.S. -Mexico border turning themselves in. The agency cites long-term detention facilities for parents and children that are at or above capacity.

"We are in a full-blown emergency, and I can not say this stronger: The system is broken", said acting CBP Commissioner John Sanders.

Donald Trump has asked for $4.5bn to address the influx of migrants, but Congress has yet to approve it.

Customs and Border Protection statistics showed that the number of asylum seekers - most from Central America - trying to find refuge in the U.S. continued to spike since President Trump took office, despite his hardline stance on illegal immigration.

Underlining the extent of the crisis, officials said that other nationalities from around the world are joining the trek from Central America to the southern USA border.

About 200 Mexican police and immigration agents blocked the advance of about 1,000 Central American migrants on a southern highway on Wednesday.

Officials say they're not counting on the hotter summer weather leading to a seasonal downturn in migration as it usually does.

"In May, 132,887 people were apprehended between ports of entry on the Southwest Border, compared with 99,304 in the month of April and 92,840 in March", the Customs and Border Protection. Already, agents have apprehended large groups of migrants in the first days of June.
