United States of America 13-0 Thailand: How many goals is too many?

The U.S. women's national team rolled up a record-shattering 13-0 win over Thailand on Tuesday to get the side's World Cup defense off to a flying start. "She has at least three games, and this is Game 1".

The U.S. picked up right where it left off in the first half after the break, scoring four goals in just over 10 minutes.

This is the first time VAR is being used in the women's World Cup and can have a significant impact. It's the World Cup folks.

The match wasn't even half-over, and the deficit more than doubled in the catastrophic first six minutes of the second half.

"I just think they could have won with some humility and grace, and they just couldn't manage to do that", she said.

There was a mix of horror and respect each time the Thai defence was overrun and the ball zoomed past the hapless Chor Charoenying in goal.

It needs to be noted that the USA team is full of full professional players while many in the Thai squad line out for university or state sides. "We've got two more games to play and we need to bounce back".

What: The U.S. Women's National Team will take on Thailand in Group F play at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup.

A Lindsey Horan rebound from a free kick gave a 3-0 halftime lead before the floodgates opened in the second half: the USA scored four times in a six-minute period, before Morgan completed her hat-trick and Megan Rapinoe took advantage of a stretched defense to convert.

Ahead of Tuesday's match, sports prognosticators had predicted that the US, as the defending tournament champions, would overwhelmingly defeat Thailand, according to USA Today.

Over on RTE, commentator Lisa Fallon said, after one of the goals, that the goalkeeper could not be blamed for the result.

"I think it's disrespectful if we don't show up and give our best and play our game for 90 minutes", Morgan added.

"You want the players to leave with a good feeling".

Instead of talking about this performance, the tone it sets for the rest of the U.S.' tournament and the implications of Alex Morgan being at her peak for a World Cup, the discourse is primarily revolving around that 13-goal figure, and the celebrations for those goals.

Thailand are not the only side facing up to the American behemoth. "There are some teams here that have only played a handful of games since the last World Cup or only in the qualifiers", said Rapinoe, who was one of the USA goalscorers against Thailand. It was great to celebrate with them back in 2015 and I'm excited to root them on in their drive to earn their fourth star.

"To be respectful to an opponent is to play hard against an opponent", Ellis said.

Group rivals Sweden, who ousted the US in the quarter-finals of the Rio Olympics three years ago, started their campaign with a 2-0 win over Chile in Rennes earlier in the day, but only after a hold-up because of torrential rain.
