Sarah Huckabee Sanders leaving role as Trump’s press secretary

Sarah Huckabee Sanders leaving role as Trump’s press secretary

In his tweet announcing Mrs Sander's pending resignation, Mr Trump wrote that he hoped she would run for the same position.

Trump praised Sanders at an afternoon event at the White House, calling her "a special person" and a "warrior".

He also thanked for her "for a job well done!"

"The 36-year old Sanders, the daughter of former Arkansas Republican Gov. Mike Huckabee, worked on her father's presidential campaign during the 2016 Republican primary until he dropped out of the race", Fox News reported.

The move comes 94 days since the last White House press briefing.

"I've loved every minute, even the hard minutes", Sanders said.

Sanders was the second press secretary under the Trump administration after replacing Sean Spicer.

Ms Huckabee-Sanders will leave the office at the end of June.

There is no word on who will succeed Sanders as press secretary.

Huckabee Sanders now joins 20 other government officials who have either been fired by the president or exited of their own volition.

Trump tweeted the announcement, saying that after spending more than three years in his administration, Sanders would be returning "home to the Great State of Arkansas". Eventually, the press secretary stopped giving daily briefings altogether at the suggestion of the president who said the press covered her "rudely and inaccurately.". In recent months, however, Sanders made herself less accessible to the press.

Special counsel Robert Mueller revealed that Sanders admitted to investigators that she had made an unfounded claim that "countless" Federal Bureau of Investigation agents had reached out to express support for Trump's decision to fire former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey in May 2017.
