Is 'running concentration camps' on southern border

A leading Holocaust museum publicly responded to Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's allegation that the U.S.is "running concentration camps" on the southern border. "I like, whatever, I want to talk to the people that are concerned with humanity that "Never Again" means something," said the left-wing lawmaker.

She recently doubled down on calling the centers "concentration camps", tweeting on Wednesday: "We are calling these camps what they are because they fit squarely in an academic consensus and definition".

Ocasio-Cortez is hardly the first to describe US immigrant detention facilities and concentration camps, which-as several commentators pointed out in response to Cheney-are not the same as death camps.

Well, that went over about as well as you might imagine with conservatives, who went off screaming that the two were not the same.

Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt told Haaretz on Wednesday that Ocasio-Cortez had made a "strategic mistake" with her use of the term.

"'Never Again" is the phrase that Jews use all over the world to make sure that the extermination between 1939 and 1945 never happens again, and she is using "concentration camps' to describe what is happening on the southern border". "This is not hyperbole. It is the conclusion of expert analysis".

Dominik offered Ocasio-Cortez the chance to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau, Treblinka, Belzec, Sobibor and Majdanek.

Todd correctly noted that immigration detention facilities are "not at all comparable" to "Nazi concentration camps".

Jew here. @AOC's point is exactly why we say "Never forget". "I use that word because that is what an administration that creates concentration camps is", she said.

"She just did the people there a tremendous disservice", Todd intoned, referring to undocumented immigrants being detained in what have been documented as sometimes inhumane conditions at the border. Pitzer asserts, as she did in an interview with JTA previous year, that what the government calls federal migrant shelters or detainment facilities fit her definition of concentration camps: "mass detention of civilians without trial".

In a Thursday tweet, Takei wrote, "I know what concentration camps are".

But if Todd was seeking to put an end to the "concentration camp" discussion, he failed utterly.

Andrea Pitzer, author of One Long Night: A Global History of Concentration Camps, defined concentration camps to Esquire as "mass detention of civilians without trial", which is precisely what's going on.

Over the course of the conflict, millions of Jews were sent to concentration camps and death camps in Germany and beyond. "You demean their memory and disgrace yourself with comments like this", Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, tweeted. "Nearly as unfortunate as the fact that you spent this whole time w/o discussing DHS freezers, "dog pounds", missing children, & human rights abuses that uphold use of this term", Ocasio-Cortez wrote.

Again, the U.S. detention centers are no fun at all, and this disturbs me personally, as an immigrant to the United States.
