Barcelona sign French star Griezmann

"The player will sign a contract with his new club for the next five seasons, through to June 30, 2024, with a buyout clause of 800 million euros", Barca said in a statement.

With the amount money they've sold in the same period added into the equation the Spanish champions have "only" spent €381 million in the last five years.

Spanish giants FC Barcelona have completed the signing of 2018 Fifa World Cup victor Antoine Griezmann after triggering the Frenchman's release clause of €120 million (R1.9 billion).

Griezmann's release clause dropped from $224 million to $134 million on July 1, which played a role in Barcelona waiting to get this deal done in order to save some money.

Atletico, who finished second last season in La Liga - nine points behind Barcelona, have now seen their third high profile departure this window.

'It was also prior to the date on which the clause was modified the communication that the player made on 14 May announcing his disassociation from the club'.

And now Griezmann has been confirmed as a Barcelona player.

Atletico claim they are due €80m more, because they feel the agreement between Barcelona and Griezmann predates the reduction in the buyout clause.

Barca, which reportedly plans to present Griezmann at Camp Nou on Sunday, has yet to respond to Atletico's claim. Now it's time to take on the challenge of a new destination. "It's our time. This is our path".

Griezmann joins Barcelona on a five-year deal with a buyout clause of €800m.

As well as his World Cup success in Russian Federation last summer, he is also a Champions League and European Championship runner-up after Atletico and France fell at the final hurdle in those respective competitions in 2016.
