USA labor secretary Acosta resigns over Epstein plea deal

The prosecutors cited a police report from Palm Beach County, Florida, stating that one of Epstein's associates tracked down one of his alleged victims when she was home from college to tell her Epstein would pay her to be quiet, the New York Post reported.

"This was him, not me", the president said. "If you have information, you observed something, you heard something, come and let us know".

Mr Acosta informed newshounds: "I attain no longer maintain it's a ways candy and excellent... to fetch Epstein as the major point of interest pretty than the not probably economy that now we fetch this day". Trump named Deputy Labour Secretary Patrick Pizzella as the acting secretary of Labour.

When he was a USA attorney Acosta granted a deal to secretly end a federal sex abuse investigation involving at least 40 teenage girls that could have landed the sexual predator behind bars for life.

"We have a Labour Minister whose department oversees the sex trade issue, where we have him make a love deal for a sex offender involved in such a sex trade, especially children and young girls", Pelosi said.

Just this past February, a federal judge in Florida ruled Acosta's egregious misstep illegal. "Taxpayers deserve better", Democratic U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse said in a statement.

Epstein was taken into custody July 6 and charged with sex trafficking and conspiracy, accused of luring underage girls to his home for sex.

Prosecutors submitted written arguments in advance of a bail hearing Monday, saying he faces "the very real possibility" of spending the rest of his life in prison amid a "shocking lack of understanding" of the gravity of his crimes.

Epstein's lawyers did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The 2008 plea deal required Epstein to admit to a single state charge of soliciting prostitution from a minor and register as a sex offender.

Acosta's resignation now puts the focus squarely on Epstein and the victims, he said.

They said the accusations against Epstein are "outside the margins of federal criminal law" and don't constitute sex trafficking since there were no allegations he "trafficked anybody for commercial profit; that he forced, coerced, defrauded, or enslaved anybody".

The allegation came in a court filing by federal prosecutors in NY, who recently arrested and charged Epstein with sexually abusing dozens of young girls from 2002 to 2005. When Acosta was a USA attorney in Miami, he signed off on what's been seen as an extremely lenient plea agreement with Epstein in 2007 with a remarkably short part-time jail sentence over allegations of sex with underaged girls.

The deal came under scrutiny earlier this year following reporting by the Miami Herald, and Democrats en masse had called for Acosta's resignation.
