Trump defended for criticising congressman over 'rat-infested' district

Simon - whose screen credits also include Homicide: Life on the Streets, The Corner, Treme and The Deuce - called Trump an "empty-suit, race-hating fraud" "simplistic, racist moron" after the president attacked Cummings by branding his Baltimore district a "disgusting, rat- and rodent infested mess".

Another critic defended Trump by accusing Cummings - who took part in last week's Mueller hearing - of badmouthing the president.

Unlike the "clean, efficient and well run" USA southern border with Mexico, Maryland's 7th congressional district is just "filthy", the president claimed.

The president said that Cummings' district, WHICH INCLUDES western Baltimore, "is considered the worst run and most risky anywhere in the United States. Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbours", Cummings tweeted.

The Baltimore Sun's editorial board wrote that: "If there are problems here, rodents included, they are as much [Mr Trump's] responsibility as anyone's, perhaps more because he holds the most powerful office in the land".

Mr. Trump spent the weekend lashing out on Twitter at the Maryland Democrat and his district, with a new wave of attacks dropping Sunday morning.

In a heated exchange with Mr McAleenan, Mr Cummings demanded "improvement" at border facilities. None of us would have our children in that position. "They are human beings", Mr Cummings said. Among the majority-black districts, his district is the second-most wealthy and educated in Maryland, Politico reported. It is around 65 per cent black. The city has one of the highest murder rates in the country. In fact, three were born in the United States and all are American citizens. "We are the greatest country in the world", Mr Cummings added during his rebuke of Homeland Security last week.

Acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney insisted that Trump's comments were not racist, but he said he understood why some people could perceive them that way. "I took you at your word".

The daily newspaper, in an editorial titled "Better to have a few rats than to be one", pointed to the district's landmarks and a median income above the national average.

"It's despicable so that you can assault him and the individuals of Baltimore this manner", Biden wrote.

"Most of us want to believe that we are better than the ugly and unmitigated racism the president has shown through tweets like those of today".

Mr Trump wrote on Twitter: "Someone please explain to Nancy Pelosi, who was recently called racist by those in her own party, that there is nothing wrong with bringing out the very obvious fact that Congressman Elijah Cummings has done a very poor job for his district and the City of Baltimore".

Mr Cummings was "a patriot and a hero", Mr Young added.

"Crowds of Twitterati, some of them genuinely outraged Baltimoreans, rushed to defend the 68-year-old Democrat under #WeAreBaltimore" hashtag.

Simon said Baltimore was "a city of good Americans who deserve more than a grifting, hollow and self-absorbed failure of a man as their president".

If you happen to follow 'The Wire' creator David Simon on Twitter, you'll no doubt be aware of how direct he is in feelings on US President Donald Trump.

CNN anchor Victor Blackwell is making waves with an impassioned and tearful cri de coeur for his hometown.

"Kushner Companies is proud to own thousands of apartments in the Baltimore area", a spokesperson told the Post when asked about Trump's tweets.

"The president says about Congressman Cummings' district that no human would want to live there", he said. You know who did Mr President? "I wouldn't be tweeting this way", the Texas Republican said on ABC's "This Week".
