India teen rape victim critical in 'suspicious' crash

Her father was detained by police and severely beaten in custody - allegedly by Sengar's brother - before dying from his injuries.

Superintendent of Police (SP) MP Verma denied having any knowledge of why the victim was not accompanied by bodyguards through security cover has been provided to them. The truck has been impounded and the driver has been arrested.

One of the aunts killed was a witness in the rape case, which has highlighted lawlessness in the northern state.

The case was registered on a complaint from the rape survivor's uncle Mahesh Singh, who is lodged in the Raebareli jail, police said.

He said that if the family of the victim demands a CBI inquiry into the case, the state government will hand it over to the investigating agency. "The reason behind it is being probed", Lucknow Police Director General Rajeev Krishna said.

Sengar, a four-time MLA who represents Bangermau in the Uttar Pradesh assembly, was arrested in 2018 in connection with the incident that took place in 2017.

"He also gave two other applications".

The truck involved in the crash had a blackened number plate, images shared on social media show. Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala alleged that the incident was a conspiracy to kill to woman. "Only a CBI probe will solve this mystery", Yadav said. In a tweet, he said, "A new special education bulletin for Indian women".

"The road accident involving the Unnao rape victim is shocking. We have also constituted a team of officers to look into the matter", said Singh, asserting that a "fair" probe will be conducted.

A subordinate of the Unnao rape survivor's lawyer, Vimal Kumar Yadav, said the survivor along with her kin returned from Delhi on Saturday without any security guards. In 2017, a report by Human Rights Watch warned that survivors of rape often suffer humiliation at police stations and hospitals, that police are often unwilling to register their complaints and that victims and witnesses receive little protection.

She said: We will fight for the girl to get justice. "Can we expect justice from the BJP government without getting answers to these questions first?"

Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Swati Maliwal visited the Lucknow Trauma Centre to meet the victim.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday attacked the BJP over the road accident in Uttar Pradesh in which the Unnao rape survivor was critically injured and took a dig at the Modi government's "Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao" scheme.

He alleged he was transferred from Unnao to Raebareli jail as part of a conspiracy. "The son of a co-accused in the case, Shahi Singh, and another youth of the village had threatened us".

Lucknow district magistrate Kaushalraj Sharma said the Uttar Pradesh government has chose to bear all the expenses of the treatment of the woman and her lawyer.
