The stricken officer was wearing a bulletproof vest and "is doing fine" a representative from Baptist Memorial medical center said.

WREG reports both of the people who died Tuesday morning were Walmart employees.

Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite says the suspect is a disgruntled Walmart employee.

The shooting at about 6.30am brought a massive police response to the shopping complex, at a busy exit off Interstate 55 in Southaven, a suburb of 55,000 people. "Everything went insane at that point", Cox said, expressing sympathy for employees.

One person was found dead inside the Walmart Supercenter and one person was found dead in the parking lot, the news outlet reported.

The wounded officer is expected to be okay according to Deborah Rosenberg, a 911 administrator.

A Walmart employee told a local television station the gunman had worked at the store for 25 years before being fired.

The suspected shooter was shot twice by an officer and taken to a hospital to undergo surgery, Moore said. "I just hear gunshots", Odom said. "Pop pop pop pop - more than a dozen shots", Odom told CNN.

The Memphis Commercial Appeal reports that the Southhaven Police Department were called to the scene at 6:32 a.m. after receiving a call regarding a shooting inside of the store. I'm at Chick Fil A, and I've counted at least 15 police cars racing into the WM parking lot.

Walmart employees joined a prayer circle outside.
