Disney Rides The Lion King to All-Time Annual Global Box Office Record

LOS ANGELES-Quentin Tarantino's latest film Once Upon A Time in Hollywood has given the maverick filmmaker his biggest opening weekend at the United States box office.

Disney has three films that have made more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office in 2019: "Avengers: Endgame", "Captain Marvel" and "Aladdin".

The last time Disney had four films cross the billion-dollar mark in one year was in 2016. The film also enjoyed the second-biggest weekend gross collection for any Hollywood movie in India, behind Avengers: Endgame, which released earlier this year. The film has comfortably crossed Rs 100 crore milestone at the domestic box office in 11 days.

Disney's stock traded higher by 1.2% to close at $146.39. Ever since Beauty and the Beast shattered box office records in 2017, the Disney remake box office numbers have nearly always crossed the $1 billion threshold.

And it still has (among other films) Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (10/18) and two billion dollar locks - Frozen 2 (11/22) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (12/20) - still to go. Sony's "Spider-Man: Far From Home" was third with $12.2 million in its fourth weekend and has earned a cumulative $344 million, "Toy Story 4" was fourth with $9.8 million, and "Crawl" fifth with $4 million.

This definitely doesn't seem like good news for fans exhausted of Disney's remakes.

That's even more good news for the ever-dominant Disney, with a live-action "Mulan" slated for early next year and more remakes in the planning stages.

Once Upon A Time in Hollywood has an 85 rating on Metacritic and has been largely well-received by critics.

"Rival studios will be there with their own competing blockbusters such as Warner Bros.' "It: Chapter 2" in September and Sony's "Jumanji: The Next Level" in December", he said.
