Liverpool not yet at their best, says Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool not yet at their best, says Jurgen Klopp

Pre-season, you always have to do your best and you still don't know where you are before you start. Again, that's how it is and we prepared everybody as good as possible.

Klopp added that Alisson, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah will return to training ahead of the Community Shield but didn't confirm whether they will be fit enough.

But Klopp said his team would still be ready to face Premier League champions City at Wembley.

Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Liverpool FC will be a "different animal" when the new campaign gets under way after their poor run of results in pre-season.

As in all sport, psychology plays a crucial role, and with the forthcoming football season looking set to be another heavily-contested one between City and Liverpool, this precursory match could set the landscape for things to come. I think the worst thing that could have happened is if we had won all the games without the six players; 4-0 or 5-0 against Napoli, then everybody would be flying from past year and into the new season, then getting the problems in the season.

City, by contrast, have been in good form in pre-season and having beaten Liverpool by one point to win the title last season, they look favourites for the title once more.

"Does it have an influence on the season?" Apart from Sergio Aguero, I think all the players have been in. "If we lose, not great". I can not say that with the results, but the sessions were really good.

Klopp admitted he was surprised the Community Shield isn't taken more seriously in England as he prepares to take part in the match for the first time.

"I would like to try to win it - it's a final. A "curtain-raiser" is unbelievable", he said.

"I don't want to find excuses before we play City. The Super Cup, you win it, nobody cares, you lose it and some care".

Mane will remain absent until next week after playing for Senegal in the African Cup of Nations final.

"Last year we had a home game against West Ham who had a couple of new players and weren't ready for us".

Can we expect the best of both?

"If you don't defend well against City you could get a proper knock and we don't want that".

There are no major injury issues concerning Guardiola, meanwhile, apart from long-term absentee Benjamin Mendy, while this weekend could see the introduction of Rodri, who has featured heavily throughout pre-season.
