Rep. Ratcliffe withdraws as director of national intelligence nominee

President Trump announced the move on Twitter, and Mr. Ratcliffe confirmed it in a statement.

"John has therefore made a decision to stay in Congress where he has done such an outstanding job representing the people of Texas, and our Country", Trump said in a subsequent post.

"I give out a title to the press and to boot they vet for me", Mr Trump went on to reveal.

"Rep. Ratcliffe never should have been considered in the first place", said New York Senator Chuck Schumer, the head of the Democratic minority in the Senate.

Even as Mueller laid bare concerns that Russian Federation was working to interfere with U.S. elections again, Ratcliffe remained focused on the possibility that USA intelligence agencies had overly relied on unverified opposition research in investigating the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

Trump told reporters on Friday that in fact he would entertain the idea of naming Gordon as the acting director of national intelligence. The congressman had no experience in national security apart from his membership of the House intelligence committee. Per an investigation by the Washington Post, Ratcliffe played a supporting role in arresting 45 people accused of being illegal immigrants. Trump is also well known for preferring "actors" to full-time officials. He claimed on his website that he sent terrorists to prison while a prosecutor but that does not appear to be the case.

He previously worked as a USA attorney and federal terrorism prosecutor and as mayor of the city of Heath, Texas. While he played a role in bringing charges against 280 non-citizens working for a chicken processing plant, Ratcliffe did not arrest anyone. Six of those cases were dismissed, two of them because the subjects turned out to be US citizens, according to court documents obtained by the Washington Post. "Confirming this individual would amount to an endorsement of this administration's drive to politicize our intelligence agencies".

"As the White House determines its next nominee, I'm heartened by the fact that ODNI has an experienced and capable leadership team to help see it through this transition", Burr said.

Ratcliffe joined a growing list of Trump's choices for senior jobs who have had to withdraw, leading to questions about the rigorousness of White House background checks.

In a Twitter thread, Ratcliffe talked about, "I used to be as soon as humbled and honored that the President attach his belief in me to handbook our nation's intelligence operations and remain convinced that as soon as confirmed, I would contain performed so with the objectivity, fairness and integrity that our intelligence agencies need and deserve". Yet right here he's, publicly telling his different for director of nationwide intelligence that the appointment is no longer price enduring the "slander and libel" of the "LameStream Media".

Trump says he will be reviewing three other candidates this weekend to succeed Dan Coats, who resigned last week.Ratcliffe, a Republican congressman from Texas and a Trump loyalist, had been criticized for exaggerating elements of his resume and for a lack of experience in the field of intelligence.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to reporters before leaving the White House in Washington D.C. the United States, on August 2, 2019.

"Fake news. He's a fine man", Mr. Trump told reporters.
