The 33-year-old, who is under contract at MLS side DC United until the end of their 2021 season, is discussing a player-coach role at Pride Park - where his former England team-mate Frank Lampard was given his first opportunity in management last year.

"When the time is right I can go into coaching or management", said Rooney.

The Daily Mail have claimed that West Bromwich Albion are looking to pull off a sensational eleventh-hour move to sign former England captain Wayne Rooney, ahead of Derby County.

"The inspiration and motivation this can generate is massive for all of our players from the first team right through to the youngsters in the academy".

"They could do with someone who can play in midfield and turn defence into attack, hit defence-splitting passes and score goals".

The decision was prompted by his wife's desire to live in England again and be closer to their family, according to The Washington Post.

Derby County missed out on promotion by the narrowest of margins last season, losing the promotion play-off final 2-1 to Aston Villa at Wembley.

Levien added that, upon signing Rooney last summer, the club always knew the midfielder was never destined to stay in D.C. for very long.

The news on Monday that Rooney is considering returning to England and leaving DC United was greeted with general shock given his form for the MLS club since signing for them in 2018. "I'm sure I can make a big contribution and can't wait to meet everyone, especially supporters".

"I am looking forward to working with Wayne from the start of next year and welcoming him to the club".

It's understood the deal will cost around £100 000 per week and will be supported by commercial sponsors as Derby work to comply with financial fair play guidelines. United now sits in fourth place, poised for another playoff run.

Rooney is also the most-capped outfield player for England, having played 120 times for his country and scored a record 53 goals.

Wayne Rooney has flown to London for talks with Derby County over becoming a player-coach at the Championship club.

"But he could definitely still play in the Premier League and a club should have gone for him".

He made a start at Huddersfield but Cocu will need all his years of experience to be able to juggle the Rooney circus. As per the recent report by Goal.com, Wayne Rooney is seriously considering the return to English football.
