Jeffrey Epstein 'found dead in cell'

Jeffrey Epstein 'found dead in cell'

He hanged himself, ABC News and other outlets reported.

Epstein was taken off suicide watch at the end of July, the person said. Wednesday is the day that New York's Child Victims Act goes into effect, giving adult survivors of child sexual abuse one year to sue an abuser for offenses in NY, no matter how long ago the abuse took place.

After Epstein's arrest, Trump acknowledged that he knew Epstein but said he "had a falling out with him a long time ago". If convicted, he would have faced a maximum of sentence of up to 45 years in prison, essentially the rest of his life. At that time, Epstein was found with marks around his neck, although it was not clear whether he had attempted suicide, made an attempt to get transferred to another prison, or was attacked by a fellow prisoner.

Sen. Ben Sasse, of Nebraska, wrote Saturday that everyone in the Justice Department knew Epstein was a suicide risk and that "his dark secrets couldn't be allowed to die with him".

Robbie Kaplan, an attorney for an accuser in the criminal case, said Saturday that "the many victims of Jeffrey Epstein and his accomplices should not lose hope". NBC reported he was not on suicide watch.

In court documents unsealed Friday, a young woman named Virginia Giuffre claimed that Epstein and socialite Ghislaine Maxwell had trafficked her between powerful men - including politicians, princes, and a wealthy financier - and kept her as a sex slave from the time she was 16 years old.

Can you confirm two investigations: one - the DOJ inspector general in the management of the prison; two - the FBI for any criminality in this death or prison mismanagement.

Sigrid McCawley, Giuffre's attorney, said Epstein's suicide less than 24 hours after the documents were unsealed "is no coincidence".

The disgraced billionaire's death also came a day after the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of NY unsealed thousands of documents related to Epstein's case on Friday.

His body was discovered at 07:30 local time (11:30 GMT) on Saturday at the facility in NY. He said the accusers will continue to seek justice "against those that stood by".

"This Epstein case is horrific and the young women deserve justice". Williams tweeted: "Died of SUICIDE on 24/7 SUICIDE WATCH?"

On July 12, U.S. Labor Secretary Alexander Acosta resigned amid increasing scrutiny over the plea agreement as a federal prosecutor in South Florida.

Social media has been rife with conspiracy theories from all sides of the political spectrum speculating that the other was somehow involved in Epstein's death.

"The victims deserved to see Epstein held accountable, and he owed it to everyone he hurt to accept responsibility for all of the pain he caused", Edwards said in a statement.

"During vetting for his cabinet post in the administration of USA president Donald Trump, Acosta reportedly claimed he was told to "back off" of Epstein - who allegedly "(belonged) to intelligence".
