George Mitchell flatly denies involvement in Epstein sex ring

In a letter to Attorney General William Barr, Republican Senator Ben Sasse said "heads must roll".

Jeffrey Epstein, the USA billionaire who was charged with sex trafficking of minors last month, was found dead by suicide in a NY jail, local media reported Saturday.

Attorney General William Barr, calling for an investigation by the FBI and the Justice Department's inspector general's office, said he was "appalled" to learn of Epstein's death while in federal custody.

The 66-year-old had been found unconscious in his cell last month with marks on his neck.

Epstein's suicide was likely recorded by jail cameras, according to Preet Bharara, the former federal prosecutor in Manhattan.

The 66-year-old financier was being held in Metropolitan Correctional Centre in NY after being charged with conspiracy and sex trafficking dozens of underage girls in the early 2000s.

United States financier Jeffrey Epstein has been found dead in his prison cell while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

In a court filing on July 25, the government said it was pursuing an "ongoing investigation of uncharged individuals" in connection with the case against Epstein. Until recently, the same unit had been home to the Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who is now serving a life sentence at the so-called Supermax prison in Colorado. In his op-ed, Bianchi called for hard evidence that the defendant's death was a suicide, and said that anyone who assisted this abuser in crimes deserves to be prosecuted.

His victims now want to know if anyone else has ever committed suicide there.

Jack Scarola, an attorney representing several of Epstein's alleged victims, said: "While I'm sure none of the victims regret his death, all of them regret the information that died with him".

"Unequivocally, he should have been on active suicide watch and therefore under direct and constant supervision", Lindsay said.

- July 12 2019: President Donald Trump's Labour Secretary Alexander Acosta resigns following criticism of his handling of the 2008 plea deal with Epstein.

- 1990s: The Duke of York is reportedly introduced to American financier Jeffrey Epstein through his friendship with Ghislaine Maxwell, the daughter of newspaper tycoon Robert Maxwell.

"The fact that Epstein took his own life within 24 hours of the unsealing of detailed and devastating documents and exhibits in Virginia Giuffre's lawsuit against Ghislaine Maxwell, which informed the public of the scope, scale and sophistication of the global sex trafficking operation Epstein conducted, is no coincidence", McCawley said.

However, it was not immediately known if he was on suicide watch at the time of his death.

The charges against Epstein were announced more than a decade after he pleaded guilty in Florida to state prostitution charges after a deal with prosecutors that has been widely criticized as too lenient.

Brad Edwards, a Florida lawyer for almost two dozen other accusers, said that "this is not the ending anyone was looking for".

Sjoberg, then 21, told the Daily Mail in 2007 that Prince Andrew had groped her at Epstein's seven-story townhouse in New York City while the two posed for a photo at a party.

A lawyer for some of the alleged victims, Lisa Bloom, said she would still seek compensation for them.

He had pleaded not guilty to charges of sex trafficking of dozens of underage girls, some as young as 14, from at least 2002 to 2005.
