Jeffrey Epstein kept secret diaries with lists of visitors

This was his second suicide attempt, according to prison officials.

His death comes a day after unsealed documents in New York revealed the extent of his abuse of young women at his home in Palm Beach, New York and the Virgin Islands.

The charges were announced more than a decade after he pleaded guilty in Florida to state charges of solicitation of prostitution from a minor in a deal with prosecutors that has been widely criticized as too lenient.

The episode links one of the most prominent politicians in ME history to a scandal that has cast suspicion on powerful men who have counted Epstein as a friend, including President Donald Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Prince Andrew, the son of Queen Elizabeth II.

GoLocal last week reported the ties between Epstein and the billionaire Leon Black, the billionaire Epstein friend who is financing the biggest newspaper merger deal of the Providence Journal's parent company GateHouseMedia and Gannett.

It was among more than 2,000 pages of bombshell testimony that related to a defamation case filed by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed to have had sex with Prince Andrew "three times".

She claims, as the then 21-Year old, together with Giuffre, 2001 in Epstein's apartment in NY of Prince Andrew " groped been: "there are also several eye-witnesses".

Giuffre wrote: "Always the instigator of a good joke but unable to take one herself, [Maxwell] didn't like when poked back that it was more in her recent taste of men, since she loved to brag about her rendezvous with her various lovers".

His lawyers maintained that the new charges in NY were covered by the 2008 plea deal and that Epstein hadn't had any illicit contact with underage girls since serving his 13-month sentence in Florida.

Jennifer Araoz, who accused Epstein of raping her when she was a 15-year-old New York City high school student, released a statement after his death.

"Virginia said that Maxwell loved to boast about her rendezvous with various lovers".

Ms Giuffre had also claimed she was forced into a sexual encounter with the Duke of York.

Epstein, 66, admitted prostituting minors in 2008 and spent 18 months in prison after agreeing a plea bargain. "I was told to do something by these people constantly", she testifies, explaining, "my whole life revolved around just pleasing these men".

In addition to Trump's having been a personal acquaintance who attended some of Epstein's parties, his former Labor secretary, Alex Acosta, became enmeshed in the Epstein scandal after attorneys in NY announced their federal charges and arrested the disgraced financier.

Buckingham Palace said on Saturday this related to U.S. proceedings "to which the Duke Of York is not a party".

Attorney General William Barr, calling for an investigation by the FBI and the Justice Department's inspector general's office, said he was "appalled" to learn of Epstein's death while in federal custody.

"Nick knows a heck of a lot about what went on", Barket told NBC, referring to his client. "The victims deserve justice, and they will get it", he added.

GOLD: Right. And in that case, the authorities said that they had been investigating that incident as a possible suicide.

Lawyers for Mr Epstein did not respond to requests for comment outside business hours.
