Iranian Foreign Minister Arrives in France

Macron mentioned he has no formal mandate to talk for the G7 leaders in delivering a message to Iran, however that he would be capable to deal with the difficulty within the context of what they agreed to throughout a dinner.

Zarif was in Paris on Friday for discussions with Macron and other French officials.

"We are strong supporters of the JCPOA (Iran deal)", said a British diplomatic source in Biarritz.

One of the Iranian officials also said Iran's ballistic missile programme was not open for negotiation.

A G7 Summit is being held in Biarritz in southwestern France.

"Zarif will convey the Iranian leadership's response to French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal aimed at saving Iran's 2015 nuclear deal", a senior Iranian official told Reuters.

Not everyone in the United States administration was, however, happy about Macron's déjeuner invitation, multiple reports suggest.

The top Iranian diplomat is scheduled to meet with his French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian later today after the meeting with President Macron.

The flight-tracking websites showed that the Iranian plane had been in Paris this week.

Iran's foreign minister flew in for side talks at the G7 summit on Sunday as host France ramped up efforts to ease tensions between Tehran and Washington.

Trump's policy of applying "maximum pressure" on Tehran via crippling sanctions has been criticised by European powers and is seen as raising the risk of conflict in the Middle East.

The two leaders met at the ornate Hotel du Palais in the Atlantic resort of Biarritz, the G7 venue, just a day after Trump reiterated his threat of tariffs against French wine over a new French tax on the largest USA tech companies.

While his European allies also want new talks, they believe the nuclear deal must be upheld, given it puts curbs on Iran's nuclear programme.

Trump's argument was that on a number of issues, like Iran and Syria, it made more sense to have Putin involved in the talks given that Russian Federation is a key player there. Initiated by the Obama administration in 2015, it restricted Iran's nuclear capabilities in exchange for the easing of sanctions.

In recent weeks, Zarif has been meeting with other world leaders, including Macron, about the nuclear issue. "You did very well last night, my God".

"I haven't discussed that", Trump said. His office said the G-7 leaders agreed he should serve as a go-between with Iran.

White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham, explaining what Trump meant when he said earlier on Sunday that he had had second thoughts after announcing more tariff raises on Chinese goods last week, said that he simply regretted not hiking them higher.
