Hurricane Dorian Slightly Changes Course, Strengthens To Category 4

Forecasters say Dorian, which had top sustained winds of 225kmh on Friday night, will threaten the Florida peninsula late tomorrow or early on Tuesday.

"Although fluctuations in intensity are possible early next week, Dorian is expected to remain a powerful hurricane during the next few days", the hurricane center said.

"Do not be foolish and try to courageous out this hurricane", Minnis said.

Dorian was expected to hit the northwestern part of the Bahamas by Sunday with the potential for life-threatening storm surge that could raise water levels 15 feet (5 meters) above normal.

The storm "has strengthened to an extremely risky Category 4 hurricane" on a five-level scale, it said. "Residents in these areas should continue to monitor the progress of Dorian".

But the National Hurricane Centre in Miami cautioned that its meteorologists remained uncertain whether Dorian would make a devastating direct strike on the state's east coast or inflict a glancing blow.

"We do have more certainty now of the general direction of this thing than we did 48 hours ago, " he said.

Forecasters expected Dorian, packing 150 miles per hour (240 kph) winds, to hit some Bahamian islands Sunday before heading near Florida and then skirting along or off the U.S. Southeast seacoast. Forecasters say many computer models indicate the storm is expected to veer sharply northeastward after passing the Bahamas and track up the Southeast seaboard, raising the risks of damaging winds and deadly flooding even if there's no direct US landfall.

After walloping the northern Bahamas, Dorian was expected to dance up the U.S. Southeast coast, staying just off the shores of Florida and Georgia on Tuesday and Wednesday before skirting SC and North Carolina on Thursday.

Many have not fully recovered from those storms.

Even with time to evacuate, if they choose, this creates a hard decision for residents of South Florida who might wish to evacuate north, where the storm could turn and land.

If that happens, Dorian would look much like Hurricane Matthew in 2016, Chinchar said.

Floyd said more than 100 hurricane evacuees visited the park on Saturday, and more are expected to visit in the coming days as the storm nears.

Central Florida towns urged residents to remain alert after past hurricanes like 1992's Andrew slammed the Bahamas and then barreled straight into the peninsula's southeast coast.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis had already declared a state of emergency for the state, and he said Friday that President Donald Trump had already approved the disaster declaration, which gets FEMA funds and resources moving faster.

Disney said the two-day closure for Hurricane Irma in 2017 cost the company $100 million. She felt well prepared and less anxious, given the latest forecasts, but still was uneasy given the storm's unpredictability.

Georgia - another southeastern state that could be in the storm's path - has declared a state of emergency for 12 counties. Other counties - Palm Beach, Glades, Hendry, Martin, St. Lucie - have issued voluntary evacuation orders. "Georgia and North Carolina also", Trump tweeted.
